The Sail America Foundation commissioned four 12 metre yachts to fund a campaign spearheaded by Dennis Connor of the San Diego Yacht Club, to take back the America's Cup in the 1987 competition at Fremantle, Australia.

1987 | Stars & Stripes (US 55), was built in 1986 by Rovert E. Derektor Inc.,and was designed by Chance/Nelson/Pedrick based on the knowledge acquired from the design of three earlier Stars & Stripes. Stars & Stripes 87 won the trials and went on to defeat the Australian defender Kookaburra III in four races to capture and bring the America's Cup back to the USA.
