Qualifying at a speed of over 164 mph on the Detroit River, Miss Budweiser once again became the boat to beat in 1999. However, the nearly three-year absent Chip Hanauer returned to the hydroplane racing scene to offer fans something different: stiff competition. For years they were looking for some other boat to stand up to the Budweiser challenge. Smashing many speed records, Miss Budweiser finished the 1999 season as the high-point National Champion.
