MIss Pico (U-100 - Sponsored by Progressive Tool and Industries) and driven by Chip Hanauer qualified late at over 153 mph setting the stage for the challenge. Unable to put his boat through the usual pre-race testing until it ran in the official heats, Hanauer and Miss Pico ran second behind the dashing Miss Budweiser until the final heat. It was then that Hanauer grabbed the inside lane and ran on to capture the Gold Cup. The win placed him one win away from tying Bill Muncey's all-time career record of 62 wins.
